Subnautica 2 - Ultimate Engine Tweaks
After over 1 year of iterative work with 50+ other UE5 games, I would like to share my definitive, optimized, custom "Engine.ini" for the game.
My goal was to just include as many optimizations as possible (both for CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD) in order to remove most stuttering, improve performance, reduce input latency and improve picture clarity (e.g. by removing Film Grain & Chromatic Aberration, optimizing Motion Blur to reduce smearing, optimizing DLSS/FSR Upscaling and Anti-Aliasing to reduce ghosting and shimmering) all without any visual loss nor introducing glitches or crashes.
If you want to know exactly what every single optimization does and what their combined result is, have a look here
What to choose between the "VRR" and "No VRR" mod variants?
VRR stands for Variable Refresh Rate, which can translate to G-Sync for NVIDIA or AMD Freesync for AMD.
You need to cross check if it is enabled both on your NVIDIA/AMD Control Panel and the Display itself (Monitor/TV)
If yes on both, use the "VRR" variant of the mod.
If no, use the "No VRR" variant instead.
Open the game at least once and close it, then you can directly download/extract my Engine.ini to paste in:
%localappdata% Subnautica2 Saved Config Windows
(Press Win + R , type the path above and click Enter to open the folder directly)
then Right-Click on it -> Properties -> make sure the "Read-Only" box is selected -> Apply/OK
For Microsoft Store / Xbox App version only:
Go and paste it into:
%localappdata% Subnautica2 Saved Config WinGDK
(Press Win + R , type the path above and click Enter to open the folder directly)
then Right-Click on it -> Properties -> make sure the "Read-Only" box is selected -> Apply/OK
For Linux / Steam Machine / Steam Deck version only:
Go and paste it into:
<SteamLibrary-folder>/steamapps/compatdata/1962700/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Subnautica2/Saved/Config/Windows/
then make sure its attribute is "Read-only"
(To Uninstall just delete the modded Engine.ini, the game will use its defaults on next launch)
DO NOT USE TOGETHER WITH OTHERS "OPTIMIZATION" MODS
(any other mod will be compatible)
For additional PC/Windows optimizations, I also highly recommend to follow and apply my:
PC Gaming: Optimized - The Ultimate Guide (including NVIDIA/AMD CP + G-Sync/Freesync + HDR Best Settings)
